Joanne and Daryl Armstrong, 1998

Daryl Armstrong is one of the most talented people I have ever met in my life.  For starters, he is wickedly funny.  Unfortunately I have long suspected I am the target for a great deal of his humor.  However Daryl isn't stupid.  Whenever I enter the room, everyone immediately shuts up and starts uttering the ancient Eastern chant of reverence "Om" to me. Don't think I am easily fooled.  I know they are playing a clever trick on me to help Daryl keep his job. Then he can continue to make fun of me!  Read the  Daryl Armstrong Experience

Fred Piser and Mary Shiflet, 1982

Fred's story is famous for an unusual reason.  He is the only guy in SSQQ history to use the studio to meet his wife without knowing how to dance.  They met at a studio western dance in 1981. During the John-Paul-Jones where everyone dances with everyone, Fred and Mary were the only two people in the room standing out.  That's when they realized they had something in common - neither of them knew how to dance at a dance party.  So Fred invited Mary to go have a drink.  Dancing is a great way to meet people, but sometimes all you really have to do is just talk to them.... and Fred was definitely a talker.

Former SSQQ Instructor Jim Smith and Pat Wilkins, 1988

That Executioner's Axe in the background has a story.  Jim Smith was a wonderful part of the studio for many years.  He loved to take people out dancing.  Jim would drive around looking for clubs that had dance floors that weren't too crowded. Then he would invite the whole studio to join him on special nights. We would jam the place!

Then a month later when Jim went to schedule his next event, to his shock the place would be out of business!   After this happened several times, one day we figured it out - the reason the dance floors were empty was the club was usually on the edge of going out of business!   We called it "The Curse of SSQQ".   Jim listed all the clubs he took credit for putting out of business on his axe.

Letty Molina and Patrick Dougherty, 2000

Gloria Carmona wrote in the November 1999 Newsletter, "I heard through the grapevine that ....Letty the Polka Queen is officially engaged to HPD Lt. Patrick Dougherty. Another SSQQ love story!!

Letty is a curvaceous beauty who is known for her love of the SSQQ Halloween Party.  Letty takes her costumes very seriously.  As a result, she either places in the Top Ten costumes or Runner-Up every year.  I often think Patrick was the guy who got lucky because he promised to help Letty win the SSQQ Costume Contest each year!!   Smart guy!   For several years now, Patrick has been winning those contests too, but I bet he knows he owes it all to his beautiful wife.  You can read more about Letty in our
Costume Hall of Fame.

Mike Hitzhusen and Hannah Baker met at the studio back in the mid-Nineties.  After their 1996, I believe Hannah's job took the two of them to Atlanta where they began their family.  That's Noah and Ruthie, by the way.  I believe both Mike and Hannah have family of their own here in Houston, so they pass through H-Town once in a while.  Hope they stop in for another chat and a new picture!
