Staff Responsibilities at Practice Night

The Group Classes are the money-making end of our business, but Practice Night is an incredibly important part of the studio as well. The popularity of Practice Night guarantees the continued popularity of the classes they serve. When Practice Night dwindles, it is a bad omen in my opinion.

Every paid instructor is expected to help with Practice Night once a month.

Getting Started.

  1. One person needs to DJ.

  2. One person needs to collect money.
Collecting money. Generally, I feel we should collect money for 25 minutes (the rules are different on Friday : 10:30 on Friday). The first 15 minutes are the most important. After the 15 minute point (about the time the drink room is opened), give the bulk of the money to Rick or Judy. Then move to Room 2 or Room 6 for the final 10 minutes and do something interesting like watch TV dance videos or work on patterns. If you are restless, see if another Instructor would mind hanging out in 2 or 6 for 10 more minutes.

  3. One person needs to make popcorn.
In the past, we did not let anyone in until popcorn was finished.  Unfortunately, I know the students would like the drinks sooner. I recommend letting students in for drinks once you have started the third bag of popcorn (five bags on Friday). Simply remove the bags from sight...  no popcorn to be served until the last bag is done.

  4. One person needs to do "Round-Up"
Encourage people to leave rooms 5, 4, 3 in that order and move to Room 2. Once everyone is in Room 2, stay and make sure everyone is either headed towards Room 1 or towards Room 6 (gracefully of course which is sometimes easier said than done). If Round-Up is stressful, get a Volunteer or a friendly student to go on Patrol with you. The added person will prove to be a big help if you run into a problem with a group or an individual. If people are hesitant to depart, then leave them alone for 2 or 3 minutes, definitely get another person to assist in Phase II, then go back and politely ask them to join in Room 1 or simply move to Room 6.

  5. Fun Time. Between 9:30 and 10:15, that is your time.
    Do what you want.

Clean Up Time - Drink Room, Computers, AC Units, and Locking Up

  1. Starts at 10:15.

  2. First turn off the popcorn machines and lock the Drink Room Door.

  3. Then grab a bucket and start pouring. Fun!

  4. Once clean up is done, you are free to go. The person considered the 'Closer' has final responsibility for closing up. When the music’s over, turn off the music computers, turn off the AC units, and turn out the lights.

  5. Computers: After you turn off the computers, then hit the two red "master" switches on the surge protectors. Everything gets turned off automatically.

  6. The DJ also is in charge of turning off ALL AIR-CONDITIONERS!!
    1. DJ booth AC: remember there are two switches. The one on the left should be left alone. The one on the right must be in the Center Position to be off.
    2. There are two AC units in Room 6.
    3. The main unit is in Room 3. Make sure the switch points "DOWN".
    4. AC unit in Room 4.
    5. AC unit in Room 5.

  7. Locking Up:
    1. Room 6.  I recommend locking the door to Room 6 first. Please close the front door (don't want strangers looking in at computers!!)  Set the burglar and leave via Room 2. You have 30 seconds to get out of Room 6. I recommend closing the door at the Registration Desk behind you to avoid setting off a motion detector.
    2. Metal Door.
    3. Room 5.  Remember to put the Panic Bar to the Bar-In position. Then set the alarm, leave, and lock the door.
