The Story of the SSQQ Logic Puzzle Club
Written by Rick Archer, January 2006

The SSQQ Logic Puzzle Club owes its origins to the infamous Einstein Puzzle which claims it was created by the Genius himself.  In addition, the Einstein Puzzle claims that only 2% of the world's population is smart enough to solve it.

Personally, I think practically everyone I know is capable of solving the Einstein Puzzle if their life depended on it. That said, I also think the majority of people would prefer to skip the challenge if given the choice.  So in some ways, maybe the 2% challenge is correct.  I propose that only 2% of the Human Race is interested enough to bother

However, the puzzle isn't that hard. Once people set their mind to it, I would wager that most people can solve the Einstein Puzzle if they are determined enough.

Back in 1998, an SSQQ instructor named Donna Ruth emailed me the Einstein Puzzle.  A few months after I solved it, the SSQQ website came on board. As part of the monthly SSQQ Newsletter, I added the Einstein Puzzle to the SSQQ Web Site and challenged the Newsletter readers to solve it.  Not many people tried it, so I dropped the subject of Logic Puzzles for four years.

2002

Late in 2002, I offered a contest involving our Halloween Pictures.
Mara Rivas was one of four winners in the Halloween Costume Picture Contest.  Then a couple weeks later, Mara was a winner again in solving the SSQQ Picture Puzzle Quiz.

2003

One day in January 2003, Mara asked when I was going to publish the next puzzle. Due to her prompting, I decided to add a logic puzzle
for the fun of it. I listed "The Telephone Call" on the web site and got all of 2 winners. One winner was Mara.

But I was undaunted.  I published "The Art Festival" the following month. This time we had five winners.  Mara Rivas was again a winner.

Since Mara was on a roll, I kept offering puzzles and Mara kept solving them. Since Mara was also my wife's best friend and a friend of mine as well, I kept rolling out more puzzles as a challenge.

Later that year in July 2003, a new name appeared: Jeff Woodman. The following month he was joined by his wife Connie in the winner's circle as well as another new puzzle solver named Ann Faget (pronounced Fa-jay).

In August 2003 another new name appeared on our list of winners: Susan Arevalo

It was the following month September 2003 that I first noticed that the Woodmans, Ann Faget, Robby Thompson, and Mara Rivas all had three victories in a row.  They had a four-way tie for first place!  They continued to match each other through the remainder of 2003.   After Robby deliberately dropped off in December when he moved to San Diego, Mara Rivas, the Woodmans, and Ann Faget finished in a three-way tie for First with with six victories in a row.  Right behind them was Susan Arevalo with 5 months.

2004

Our first great champion, Mara Rivas, hung in there for one more month at the start of 2004, then just gave up the ghost in February.  Mara made a brief comeback with a couple more puzzles in 2005, but then she quit the Logic Scene completely to pursue love.  The rest of us were completely baffled.  What kind of illogical decision was that?

Mara's departure left Ann Faget in a two-way tie with the Woodmans for First Place.  February was also notable for the arrival of Ritesh Laud who would go on to solve every puzzle for the remainder of 2004.

August 2004 was notable as we set a record for participation with 16 correct answers. The puzzle was to solve the identity of playing cards. For some reason it caught everyone's fancy and they "aced" it so to speak.  16 is still the record.

Jeff and Connie, Ann, and Susan Arevalo ran the table for 2004 with perfect 10 for 10 scores. At the end of 2004, Jeff and Connie were tied with Ann for First Place with 16 victories in a row. Susan Arevalo was right on their heels at 15.

2005

Jeff and Connie Woodman dropped out of the race in January 2005 as Connie had to have hip replacement surgery. They submitted a couple of answers during 2005, but for most part stayed in the background. This left Ann Faget with sole possession of First Place, but just barely. Susan Arevalo was in Second Place only a month behind all year long waiting for Ann to slip up.  Throughout the year neither woman blinked. Both Ann and Susan finished 2005 11 for 11.

Meanwhile Ritesh Laud emerged as our third superstar. He joined Ann Faget and Susan Arevalo in running the table with a perfect 12 for 12.  Finally we had our first male champion since Jeff (but he had Connie's help!)  Not bad for a guy!

In 2005 was also notable for the emergence of two strong newcomers. Anita Leung finished the year with 10 straight victories after starting in March 2005 to become our fourth Logic Superstar.  Anita kept her victory streak alive DESPITE getting married in the middle of the year and also taking a Beginning Whip class which as everyone knows kills brain cells.  And the beautiful blonde Karen Babb overcame the curse of blondness to win 7 times to finish in Fifth Place for the year.

Sad to say, all four of the Superstars beat me.  I have a personal rule that I have to solve the logic puzzle before I can submit it to my Logic Superstars.  In June 2005, I was certain I had the Baseball Puzzle solved, but when I looked at the answers, I realized I had made a mistake by going too fast. Retracing my steps I found my error, but it was too late. I had clearly blown my own chance at a Perfect Score. Phooey.

2005 was a tough year for me all around.  In particular towards the end of the year I had so many problems created by Hurricane Rita that I fell way behind in my work. So I resubmitted puzzles from 2003 to finish out the final 4 months of 2005.  To my astonishment I noticed that Ann and Susan had been playing cat & mouse for so long that they had actually solved two of those puzzles two years earlier. I decided the correct thing to do was simply give them a courtesy pass to the next round. What would be the point of making them do it again?

I should have made them solve it!  To my dismay, our grand total for the year stopped right at 99!  I could have sworn we would break into Triple Digits for the year, but it wasn't meant to be.  That's what I get for being considerate. Hmmph.

Fortunately over Christmas Break 2005 I finally found the time to resume my love affair with Logic Puzzles. The new puzzle - Books of Charles Dickens - is really nasty!!  It might actually trip up one of our champions.

As we finished the year, Karen Babb, Margaret Erlandson, and Randy Piniola rode a two-game winning streak into the new year?  Will one of them become our next superstar?

Will we crack the 100 Barrier in 2006?

Will Ann Faget make a fatal mistake in one of her answers or forget to send in a reply?  We know that Susan has stayed on her heels for two years waiting for the opening.  That's a long time to be dogging someone.  Surely Ann feels the pressure!

And what about YOU the READER?  Are you ready to join the SSQQ Logic Puzzle Club?  It's really easy to join.  Just solve that puzzle and email your answer to dance@ssqq.com!!

February 2007:  High School Reunion

This was the puzzle that ended it all.  It was so hard that I think I got maybe one correct response.  The combination of the difficult Cats and Dogs puzzle from the previous month combined with High School Reunion put an end to the fun.

Here is a letter from Ann Faget that summed up the feelings of everyone:

Subject: Logic answers

Hi Rick - here are my answers for the February and March logic puzzles. As you may note, I never sent in the February answers until now, so technically, I have already broken my streak. I guess you just gave me credit anyway because it was such an easy puzzle.

Rick, I enjoy doing the logic puzzles.  I even enjoy the really difficult ones (like this month's) when I have time. The problem is that often I don't really have the time to devote the necessary hours (and hours and hours) that it takes to solve the really tricky ones. (It's even worse when I interpret the clues literally, as in the Dance Lessons puzzle, and waste even more hours. This month's puzzle was yet another example. No where does it state explicitly that there is one man and one woman for each profession and hobby, just that no husband and wife share either. One could interpret this to mean that it would be possible for both dentists to be women, both golfers to be men, etc. Then one would find the puzzle even more difficult than it already is.) And yet I am compelled to keep solving them in order to keep the Logic Puzzle Queen title that you imposed on me, which has become more of a burden than an honor. I feel like I can't quit, especially on a difficult one, because then you will mock me in the newsletter. Then I end up feeling resentful and angry. It's not fun anymore. So I have resolved to take a break from the Logic Club for a few months.  Susan can be the new Queen, with my blessing. I hope you understand, Ann

Rick Archer's Note:  It is now May 2008.  Ann's letter served as the finishing blow to our monthly logic puzzle here at the dance studio.  I was already feeling very frustrated.  Other than my four superstars (Ann Faget, Susan Arevalo, Ritesh Laud, and Anita Leung), I was having trouble getting new people interested.

One reason for that was the puzzles were getting increasingly tough to solve.  It was getting harder and harder to find good puzzles to publish.  Thanks to the Sudoku craze, I literally couldn't find new Logic Puzzle books at the book store when I looked.  The whole world had gone Sudoku so new books of Logic Puzzle were not being published.

So I kept combing through my old books.  It seemed like the only puzzles left were so difficult that only a very few people could solve them.

It wasn't like the lady was a quitter.  After all, starting back in 2003, Ann and Susan Arevalo had solved everything I had to offer for nearly four years!  So once my champion said it wasn't any fun any more,  I figured it was time.   I just quit offering puzzles after that.  Interestingly enough, not one person wrote to ask where they had gotten to.  I took that as a major signal I had done the right thing.

One of these days I will start it up again.   RA
