TRADITION OF GIVING AT CHRISTMAS
|
10-01-2024 Rick
Archer's Note:
Chapelwood Methodist Church has been kind enough to sponsor
my Monday night dance class for 14 years. Two years
ago I learned for the first time of Chapelwood's Christmas Manna program.
Once I realized the purpose was to help families in need at Christmas,
it
took a nanosecond for my inner "Charles Dickens" to kick in.
One the spot I thought of how a Christmas dance party
could turn into a delightful way to support Chapelwood's
worthwhile
effort.
Indeed, last year's party was a huge success.
Our large crowd of 150 guests
had great fun dancing for a worthy cause. I might
add our guests were very generous. We raised over
$3,000, an amazing display of support from Houston's dance
community far beyond anything we could have
expected.
So why do we call our
party "Waltz
into Christmas"?
Waltz
has a rich musical legacy at Christmas. Classics such
as The First Noel, What Child is This,
It came upon a Midnight Clear, Silver Bells,
We Three Kings, and Carol of the Bells
are all Waltzes. I promise to play these carols
at our party as a rather unique way to pay tribute to our
Lord.
That
said, the Waltz music will only comprise 20% of the music
played. The bulk of the music will be Texas Twostep,
East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing, and a couple Salsa
tunes. The point being that a knowledge of Waltz
is hardly necessary. That said, if you would like to
learn to Waltz for the party, my wife Marla and I will
conduct a
six-week Waltz class on Mondays starting November 4

ABOUT THE DANCING
|
|
MUSIC:
1 song in 5 will be a Waltz. Over 2 and a
half hours, there will be 42 songs. Do the math: 8 Waltzes.
The other 80% of the music will be
COUNTRY-WESTERN TWOSTEP AND POLKA,
BIG BAND
SWING MUSIC, WEST COAST SWING, CHA-CHA, plus 2 SALSAS and 2 FOXTROTS.
THE GRAND WALTZ PROCESSION:
The highlight our
party will come at 8 pm. For those who are experienced
Waltz dancers, we will form two giant concentric circles.
From there, we will perform a previously-rehearsed Waltz pattern
that allows people to switch partners every 15 seconds for 8 minutes
to famous Christmas Carol Waltzes. One can expect to dance
with a minimum of 30 different partners.
3 WORKSHOPS TO CHOOSE FROM (6:00-6:30 pm)
1. RICK ARCHER will teach the Waltz Pattern used in the Grand
Waltz Procession.
This class will target people with little to no Waltz experience.
2. SHARON
SHAW will teach an Advanced Waltz pattern.
3. TRACY AKIN will teach the fundamentals of Texas Twostep for
beginners.
DANCE WORKSHOPS: THERE IS NO EXTRA CHARGE FOR THE WORKSHOPS. THE
IDEA IS TO GIVE PEOPLE WITH A MINIMUM OF SOCIAL DANCE EXPERIENCE A
CHANCE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE DANCING AT THE PARTY.
